What is DPL or what is not?
Today, it is a desired phenomenon to control the sharing of personal data as much as viruses. It has been understood that sharing will not be as easy as it used to be, especially in our world where physical boundaries have been removed. As a matter of fact, the regulations brought by the New World confirm this situation. Not long ago, TR identity numbers, names, addresses, etc. other information was disclosed and shared in Turkey. Therefore, the Law on Protection of Personal Data No. 6698 is an important regulation..
With the DPL numbered 6698 published in the Official Gazette on April 7, 2016, the transition was requested to be completed after 2 years. Today, Personal Data is protected by law. Businesses are required to identify and secure the personal data they have processed within the stipulated dates and transfer this situation to the VERBIS application. Although it has been postponed a few times, it is essential for businesses to complete this process eventually. However, a general belief is that these dates are perceived as transition dates for DPL. However, these are the deadlines for businesses to notify the VERBIS system. This is not the deadline for businesses to get personal data security. As of April 7, 2018, businesses are now obliged to process their personal data in accordance with the law. Therefore, the sanctions that the enterprises may face in case they do not fulfill their legal obligations are already applied.
Another misconception is the idea that Personal Data management should be fixed and done once. This idea is not correct. In all cases where Personal Data is processed, businesses are required to manage and maintain this process. It has been understood that static structures such as Excel cannot be kept up-to-date and insufficient for personal data management. Just like the development of document management systems, the implementation of Personal Data Management Systems has started. As businesses, it is essential that decision makers act with this awareness and evaluate the best service required.
